water-treatment text water

The world is faced with increasing demands for high-quality drinking water and for treatment of municipal, agricultural, and industrial wastewaters.

The chemical structure and characteristics of St. Cloud Zeolite make it a low cost, environmentally safe means of treating municipal water supplies, sewage effluent, biological wetlands, industrial and mining waste-water discharge and swimming pool and spa water.

When used as a filtration media, St. Cloud Zeolite helps remove even trace amounts of ammonium ions from swimming pool or spa water through the cation exchange process where the  ammonium chemically bonds to the zeolite molecules.

Its high cation exchange capacity (CEC) and surface charge density also makes St. Cloud Zeolite a good option for agricultural operations that need improved wastewater filtration and better control of waste runoff.

Minimizing Runoff

Another issue faced by farmers and other soil and turf management professionals is the problem of runoff – too many nutrients, pesticides, and herbicides washed out of soils can be detrimental to neighboring streams, lakes and oceans.

By retaining and holding nutrients, St. Cloud Zeolite minimizes fertilizer runoff and reduces the introduction of some excess pesticides and herbicides to natural water systems.

Removing Ammonia

The most common cation in waters potentially affecting human and animal health is ammonia which  can be removed by exchange with biologically acceptable cations such as K+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Na+ residing on the exchange sites of St. Cloud Zeolite.

Because St. Cloud Zeolite has a high selectivity for ammonia in solution (converted to ammonium when it reacts with water), it may, depending on flow rates and zeolite volumes and loading, reduce the ammonia content of wastewater by 95%, thereby reducing the release of excess levels of ammonium and inhibiting the growth of algae and the depletion of oxygen.

Inexpensive & Easy Wastewater Treatment

St. Cloud Zeolite is used as a method of improving waste water treatment operations, effluent discharge quality and in producing a higher value sludge product for agricultural applications. St. Cloud zeolite may bring properties of improved settling, water clarification, ammonia and base metal adsorption, odor control and other attributes.

St. Cloud Zeolite is an inexpensive, environmentally friendly solution that can improves the effectiveness of wastewater treatment. Adding St. Cloud zeolite to municipal or industrial wastewater treatment plants may:

  • provide higher effluent quality by reducing nutrients in the effluent
  • reduce odors and gases and improve air quality
  • attract dispersed particulates and filaments to increase sediment removal
  • reduce chemical costs (i.e. alum & polymers)
  • improve sludge dewatering
  • generate and increase treatment plant capacity
  • reduce or eliminate capital expenditure of new treatment systems
  • provide a higher quality sludge for better resale value
  • lower the ammonia content of waste streams to acceptable levels

Modified or Combined Zeolites

Modifying St. Cloud Zeolite or combining it with other contaminant-removal technologies allows treatment of much broader classes of contaminants. St. Cloud zeolite, modified by treatment with a surfactant, adsorbs negatively charged solutes such as nitrate and arsenate, and neutral organics, such as, solvents and fuel components.

These surfactant-modified zeolites (SMZ) treat groundwater contamination, storm water runoff, and solvent vapors from painting operations. The attrition resistance and high reactivity of St. Cloud zeolite aid these adsorbent applications.
